Solution to fix the USB Drive not recognized problem

USBs have surely made our lives simpler and convenient. We like plugging our pen drives, flash drives and other external devices in USB ports but there is a strange problem that happens sometimes that when we insert our USB drive into the USB port we get an error message saying “USB Drive Not Recognized”.

The error message reads “One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message”. If we open the My Computer we will notice that even our drive has not been detected.

The first thing that will come to our mind is that we should try uninstall and then reinstall the USB drivers but here is the simpler solution and yes no need to edit the registry or try something in the Device Manager.

Solution for the problem:

1.    The solution is just to “Turn off the computer and unplug it from the power supply” (Unplugging is necessary as today even after turning the system off, the motherboard continues to get power).

2.    Let the system remain off for about a minute.

3.    Restart the system and wait for it to boot completely before inserting the drive again again.

Update:

You can try this solution also. Run devmgmt.msc in the run box, then click on My Computer in the Device Manager. Assuming that the USB is in inserted state, click on Scan for Hardware changes under the Action menu. USB should be detected now.

That’s it the problem will not appear again.

This is only partially correct, as I have a laptop which I shutdown and disconnect from power on a daily basis. Yes, everytime I restart it the drive seems to work but if I were to unplug the drive and plug it back in the PC does not recognise it!

i have a samsung r510 laptop running vista home premium sp1 and it doesnt work for me…could someone clarify for me what malfunction in regard to hardware actually means? does it mean it wont work again or that its just a temporary operating problem?

  4. admin says:

hardware malfunction is not a permanent problem, but is caused due to some conflict of a software with a hardware. So u need to find the cause (the incompatible software) and remove it. It can be a RAM problem as well, so re-insert it after taking it out and cleaning.

This does not work for the active reapeater USB cable I have connected to a machine. Worked great for more than 2 years. All of a sudden not recognized. No software was added or removed.

  6. admin says:

Compatibility between the USB port and the USB device is also important. Both things should be of same speed.

Admin when you suggest switching off the “system”, do you refer to a laptop pc as well? Or do you allow the laptop battery to discharge completely before doing the usb test again?

  13. admin says:

no, just make sure that laptop is off or remove the battery if you can.

I’ve tried following the restart instruction as well as the run instructions… now what?

Also the drive does light up, and my computer says that it is up to date. So my computer knows it’s there and shows it as connected, but the flash drive just won’t show up.

  19. Manu says:

I have a same problem with a PC of a friend. Reading in Internet i have follow:

The error may be produced by corruption of two files

    in C:\windows\system32\usbstor.inf & usbstor.pnf

Cold be copy this two files from a PC working properly and try again with a usb device. You must reboot after copy.

I can’t try this because my friend go out the city. May be us can try, but after make a copy the two original files of PC with trouble.

Tell me if work it or which was result.

I really wanted this solution to work. It was so elegant, so streamlined, so 21st-century. Restarting anything is the perfect fix in our age. No luck with me I’m afraid. iPhone can be detected without problems on other computers except the one I want to use.

I have the above USB device not recognised error when I plug in my ipod shuffle. I have tried to switch power off, uninstall and reinstall itunes, drivers etc but problem is still there. Also it is sometimes confirming that an ipod is there but not recognising name of device, which it used to do and I could see what was on my ipod from my itunes page but now I can’t access my music files on it so am unable to add or delete music. I have tried to plug the ipod into a different laptop however the same message about the USB device still shows up. I really don’t know what else to do now.
