With growing constraints and charges in sending a text message to someone, we are seeing more and more apps that allow us to send text messages worldwide but nothing beats the most popular text (also pictures, videos, and location) messaging service called as WhatsApp. I have been using WhatsApp for quite some time now and what I liked the most about it is that it is completely free to install, to use and to send messages to anywhere in the world.
WhatsApp is lot popular as messenger service that almost everyone I know is using WhatsApp. WhatsApp is also an ad free service which adds to its popularity. Well I feel that being simple to use and being a free app is the sole reason for its growing consumer base, however you might know that it was not free for a limited time sometime ago.
What’s came as a surprise to me recently was that in a blog post WhatsApp announced its annual subscription fees for all the WhatsApp users. So that means, WhatsApp will now be charging $0.99 (not a huge fee though) for an entire year, after the first free year of use.
“As you know, we used to charge iPhone users a $.99 one time payment, while Android and other platforms had free service for the first year and paid $0.99 a year after that. From now on, we’ve simplified our business model so that all users on all platforms will enjoy their first year of WhatsApp service for free, and only pay $.99 per year after that.”
With the new version WhatsApp has also incorporated a new feature of backing up the conversation directly on to the iCloud. Although one can download the app for free and use it for free for the first year, they will have to pay to continue using the services starting the second year.
I am not sure how this move will affect the company but I know most people don’t like to spend on some app. If we see the WhatsApp database reducing, it might be due to this move. [via]
